Requirements for corrosion inhibitor release from damaged primers for stable protection: A simulation and experimental approach using cerium loaded carriers

In this work a diffusion-driven inhibitor transport model is used to help in the design of inhibitor-loaded carriers for anticorrosive primers. The focuses on release at damaged locations different dimensions exposed electrolyte and validated experimentally. damage are first simulated determine minimal rate necessary reach required concentrations corrosion protection metal. Kinematic mass conservation laws then as first-order approximations study effect characteristics nano- micro-particles loaded with inhibitors embedded an organic coating during 100 s immersion. results experimentally using epoxy coatings containing cerium-loaded zeolites diatomaceous earth micro-carriers respectively. These experiments confirmed predictions, showing that under exposure conditions nano-particles only able protect relatively small damages micron size dimensions. Micron-sized other hand allow sufficient larger damages, even lower pigment volume concentrations. Additional simulations rapid diffusion pathways inside also good agreement experiments, indicating presence might play important role sustained local damages.
